News From Japan Says Apple Planning LTE 4G iPads and iPhones for 2012

AppleInsider has a story today based on a report from Japan?s Nikkei Business which states that Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo is currently holding talks with Apple with a view to launching an LTE-capable iPad in mid 2012, to be followed by a 4G LTE iPhone in fall 2012. According to the unconfirmed report, NTT DoCoMo executives travelled to the US in November for talks with Apple CEO Tim Cook, which are said to have revolved around Apple?s forthcoming LTE-ready iPhones and iPads. However, AppleInsider points out that the accuracy of the report is called into question by a previous report earlier in the month in the Wall Street Journal, which said that Apple?s negotiations with NTT DoCoMo had stalled, with Apple allegedly refusing to grant the Japanese carrier permission to install its own proprietary software on the new iPhones and iPads. However, that doesn?t necessarily mean that the latest rumour from Nikkei Business is not true, of course, as its always possible that negotiations have resumed and the original stumbling block between the two parties has been resolved. As ever, we'll just have to wait and see!

Apple's next generation iPads will use new LCD panels

There have been many rumors, as Apple has accustomed us so far, surrounding the future version of the iPad. Sources state that next-generation iPads are expected to adopt LCD panels with resolution higher than 2048 by 1536. The current single LED light bar designed for the iPad 2S/3 will have to be modified in order to maintain or strengthen the brightness of the panels. DigiTimes claims that Apple has two alternatives to chose from, offered by LED black-light vendors: one proposition would be to keep the light bar in a single-bar form factor but with two LED chips inside, the other suggests using dual-LED light bars.

Apple is more likely to adopt the design using dual light bars, as the blacklight unit vendors have solved issues related to heat dissipation and battery consumption for the dual light design. It is highly uncertain whether Apple is launching an incremental update for the iPad, or a completely redesigned tablet in the coming months. Apple is expected by some to introduce the iPad 3 early next year, with The Wall Street Journal being the highest-profile publication to confirm that timeline. A higher-resolution "Retina" display is the most widely-claimed enhancement scheduled for the device, although several reports have indicated that Apple's suppliers are struggling to produce the displays in volume.

Judging by the company?s annual refresh cycles, the next tablet could arrive sometime around March, yet overall industry experts can not yet agree whether this will be an iPad 2S (much like the incrementally updated iPhone 4S) or a full-fledged iPad 3 redesign. Inside sources have indicated that even if Apple does launch only a minor update to the iPad 2, the tablet?s design will be thinner ? a huge selling point for all portable devices, not just Apple?s. Slimmer is better these days!

iTar to turn iPads into music instruments for $200

A cool new dock from Starr Labs will turn your iPad into a guitar called the iTar. All you have to do is turn your iPad on its side and put it into the dock that becomes the neck of the guitar. This comes complete with strings that can actually be played, and, by fiddling your iPad screen and playing the strings on the neck you can actually play the instrument, in a more real-life experience than with Guitar Hero. We’d even venture to say it comes fairly close to actually playing a regular guitar.

Starr Labs is known more for making high-end MIDI guitar controllers that are way out of most players’ budget, but iTar promises to be “accessible-cool”, selling for the price of $200. For even more exciting news, the iPad’s touchscreen and computing power leaves the door open for using the iTar not only as a guitar, but as a drumkit, synth, compositional tool, teaching aid and anything you can design and app for. We are actually eager to see what apps developers will come up with once the iTar is out on the market, as it would make a great learning device for a lot of people.

However, on the downside, the iTar doc hasn’t gone into mass production yet, as the producers are looking for investors to get things rolling. They’ve gone to Kickstarter, hoping to raise the needed $50,000 by December 6th – a short term wishlist, if you ask us.

iPads and Angry Birds rolled flying off into space

In one of the most bizarre implementations of the tablets, the Russian space program will send a pair of iPad tablets and a stuffed Angry Birds toy to their astronauts at the International Space Station. On October 30th the Progress M-13M, an unmanned resupply spacecraft, will start its trip to the ISS. Along with propellant, oxygen, water and crew equipment, the spacecraft will also be carrying two iPads.

NASA has commented on the issue, saying that the iPads are only for entertainment purpose at the present moment and said that the tablets will join other Apple products on the board, such as iPods and iPhones.

The Angry Birds plush dolls will accompany the Russian crew members into space. Apparently there’s a Russian tradition where astronauts hang a toy fro the launch vehicle, as Russian cosmonaut Anton Shakaplerov told reporters at a press conference. When the ship enters zero gravity, the toy will start to float. The astronauts 5-year-old daughter chose the Angry Birds plush dolls for this trip. “She asked me to fly it – and be sure of its return!” the cosmonaut told reporters. It is also very likely that Rovio’s Angry Birds game will be installed on the space-bound iPads. Rovio will be the first app development company to have a game played in space!

According to sources, NASA is still reviewing other tablet systems and plans to fly at least one more tablet to the ISS next week. A recent NASA video showed that some tablets are being used by NEEMO-15 aquanauts for taks management at its Aquarius undersea habitat.

iPhone and iPads winning the enterprise battle

Today, Good Technology released a report targeting the growing sector of the mobile device market, compiled from the company?s range of Fortune 500 clients that use Good?s service to provide email, mobile device management and security products for handsets and tablets. And the results aren?t surprising either.

iPhone and iOS activations continue to be on top, with iPhones representing 61% of all smartphone activations on Good?s platform and iOS devices covering 70% of activations (notice the little drop from 78% they had in the previous quarter). Android smartphones on the other hand, seem to be doing better than usual, with 39% smartphone activation, showing an improvement month over month. Even so, when it comes to enterprise smartphones, iPhone 4 still gained the first place, with 28,3% of the activations by Good Tech, although the numbers have slightly dropped from the second quarter, when iPhone 4 had 32,4%.

"This quarter, we saw Android smartphones gain in percentage of total activations," said John Herrema, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Good Technology. "This is likely due to consumers holding back purchases of new iPhones in anticipation of Apple's latest release (the iPhone 4S)?as our reports indicate, consumers are setting the agenda for enterprise mobility."

Among Android devices, the EVO 4G was the most popular enterprise handset, counting for 1,6% activations. And when it comes to the iPad versus other tablet devices?well there are no other tablet devices ? the iPad is the only one worth considering, as far as a lot of major companies are concerned. "To say iOS tablets dominated adoption in the enterprise is to understate the case.... Android tablet activations within Good's customer base remain in the realm of a rounding error compared to what we're seeing with iPad and iPad 2.", the report mentioned.

New survey finds that using iPads boosts the performance of students

TUAW has an exclusive report today on a new survey conducted by the mobile learning program ACU connected to Abilene Christian University, which has recently been studying benefits for students in the use of the iPad in a broader study - three years to consider the benefits of the mobility of students with the new generation of technical devices that are available to them. As noted by TUAW, the results are very positive for the iPad and Apple. For example, a study shows that students who used their iPad to annotate the marked text 25% more on issues concerning the transfer of information than their classmates who have used only pen and paper. In another study of first ACU?s class fully digital, the researchers found that the iPad is helping students to be more time-efficient ?learning moments?, as well as promote (whatever they are!). Another positive finding was that students graduate with a reported online program a satisfaction rate of 95% of their iPad core curriculum. Some very impressive general competition figures it indeed for Apple!

GameStop may soon be selling iPads, iPhone and iPod

9to5 Mac, says that she has heard of sources? ?several that GameStop is about to start selling devices iOS, including the iPhones, iPads and iPod touches to their retail stores. Apparently dealers at a Las Vegas learned the new GameStop show first hand last week. No date is given as to when GameStop may begin stocking Apple?s iOS range, but 9to5 Mac reported that GameStop stores have already started to accept iOS devices as trade credit buy other goods in stores. It?s possible, they will wait until October, when the next iPhone is due to be released to ensure maximum publicity. The fact that video games U.S. leader as GameStop output is now moving in the territory iPhone and iPad could be seen as a more suitable profile indication high iOS game games market wider. And even more brilliant it?s new to Apple also, of course, as they?ll be achieved even more than clients having the device iOS will available in such huge chain like GameStop.
