[Rumors] No LTE or WiMAX Support for New iPhone; Launch Oct. 14th; New Prices

A new report from the Wall Street Journal indicates that the new iPhone to be announced today will not support LTE or WiMAX 4G technology. Here's a quote from the WSJ regarding the issue, According to people familiar with the company?s plans, the hotly anticipated device won?t operate on long-term evolution or WiMAX fourth-generation networks. Those wireless networks promise speedier downloading to mobile devices of episodes of television programs, as well as cute baby photos.

The people said the device will work on 3G networks, which are broadly in use today and are the standard for the current iPhone 4. AT&T says its HSPA+ network has 4G-like speeds.

This would be a disappointing surprise if it turns out to be true. Unfortunately, major news corps like the WSJ tend to be outlets for controlled leaks for companies like Apple, so this rumor is very plausible.

Luckily, there are some happy rumors floating around as well. Supposedly, October 14th may be the actual launch date of the new iPhone, which is not too far off at all. Also, there are rumors of the new pricing structure for the different iPhone variants. Here's a quote from the macrumors.com article, Meanwhile, 9to5Mac shares a couple of "uncorroborated" tips it has received claiming that the next iPhone will launch on October 14th and that the iPhone 4S could come in at $99/$199/$299 price points for 16 GB/32 GB/64 GB models. Such a pricing structure would likely mean that the 8 GB iPhone 4 reportedly set for introduction would be priced at $49 with an iPhone 3GS potentially available for free. All of the listed prices would be for on-contract devices. We will know for sure later today which of these rumors turn out to be accurate.

Atari Arcade Joystick launch for iPad

After several attempts of third-party manufacturers to create joysticks of style and cabinets for the iPad arcade game, Atari decided to weigh in with its own authentic version and it?s a real beauty! According to MacRumors, which showcases the Atari Arcade Duo Powered Joystick today, all that you need to do to start playing some classic games such as asteroids, Centipede and Missile Command on your iPad with an Atari joystick authentic, is place it in the stand as a photo, and there you go! MacRumors speculates as to how the joystick is connected to your iPad, holding that it is probably connected via Bluetooth, which is also how the arcade cabinet for iPad, rather than iCade by a direct connection with the dock connector. Apparently, Atari has also updated its Greatest Hits for iPad app to provide support for the new joystick. Still, the joystick does not have a release date or price, but they should have details on a release date soon here.

iCloud could have 150 million subscribers at launch

Fortune Tech?s Apple 2.0 blog reports today that a new survey from RBC Capital, which took place a week after Apple CEO Steve Jobs? speeches at the WWDC, Apple?s iCloud forthcoming service could launch as 150 million subscribers, that would put Apple up there next to these heavy weights such as Yahoo and Google/Gmail, with 300 million and 200 million subscribers respectively. iCloud would still have a way to go to Facebook, with 700 million subscribers, however. The projection is based on the manner in which 1,500 respondents answered questions about iCloud, with 76% saying that they were likely to register to Apple?s free service when it arrives in the fall and 73% saying that they were likely to use iMessage, Apple?s version of BlackBerry Messenger. However, the response to Match Apple?s iTunes service was not quite so enthusiastic, with only 30% saying that they were likely to sign up for it, probably because it has a subscription of $24.99 per year.
